Ride-Alongs, Observations and Tours

EMS Today partners with many local agencies to offer conference registrants the opportunity to participate in Ride-Alongs, Observations and Tours in the greater Baltimore Area. Learn how other agencies work and manage patients on the job. Please schedule your ride-along in advance with the agency of your choice. Once you arrive in Baltimore, you may schedule with agency staff on-site in the Registration Area, if vacancies remain.


Ride-Alongs: Earn CEU!

Anne Arundel County (MD) Fire Department
This combination Fire Department south of Baltimore handles 74,000 responses each year covering a population of 512,000. The EMS service is a fire based system with 22 ALS units and 9 BLS units.

Baltimore City Fire Department
The City of Baltimore has a daily population of over one million people and averages 140,000 EMS calls per year.  Approximately 75% of those calls result in patient transport by the Baltimore City Fire Department utilizing 24 full time EMS transport units.

Baltimore County Fire Department
This department has 53 EMS transport units and 8 supervisors that respond to over 90,000 EMS calls each year. They operate a combination career and volunteer service.

Johns Hopkins Lifeline / STAT MedEvac 10 Helicopter Program
Observe a shift at the Johns Hopkins / STAT MedEvac 10 helicopter base, located on the Inner Harbor. STAT MedEvac is a direct Air Carrier E3MA774L and arranges and coordinates the operation of air ambulance services. All flights are operated by STAT MedEvac.

Montgomery County (MD) Fire and Rescue Service
Located just 30 miles from Baltimore, this combination system responds to 125,000 calls for service each year providing fire, rescue, emergency medical services, as well as special operations including a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, HazMat response team, and Swift Water Rescues teams.

New Castle County (DE) EMS Division
This is a multi-jurisdictional county municipal paramedic service covering the 437 square miles and over 530,000 residents of New Castle County, Delaware. This “tiered response” non-transport ALS agency has a reputation for clinical excellence. The EMS Division has 116 authorized positions and responded to over 30,000 incidents in 2011.

Stafford County (VA) Fire and Rescue Department
This department is a combination (volunteer/career) fire and rescue department with over 450 personnel in the Metropolitan Washington, DC area. It operates 11 Engines (3 ALS), 4 Trucks, 3 Heavy Rescues, 3 Fire Boats and 20 ambulances (10 ALS) answering 23,000 calls each year. For a map/location see: www.staffordfirerescue.com

Observations

The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center is Maryland’s Primary Adult Resource Center (PARC) for Trauma. In the Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU), you will have the rare opportunity to observe the assessment and treatment of critically injured patients and examine the admission process in one of the world’s premier trauma centers. As the patient enters the hospital either by land or air, the observer can experience the transition from prehospital providers to the TRU clinical staff.

Maryland’s EMS System
Tour 3 facilities on one tour! Visit the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Maryland State Police and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Service Systems (MIEMSS). Space is limited to 30 participants, so sign up early.
