Ride-Alongs, Tours & Observations
EMS Today partnered with many local agencies to offer conference registrants the opportunity to participate in Ride-Alongs, Observations and Tours in the greater Baltimore Area for 2010. Those who attended were able to learn how other agencies worked and managed patients on the job. Check back soon for the list of ride-alongs, tours & observations that will be held at EMS Today 2011.

2010 Ride-Alongs
Anne Arundel County (MD) Fire Department
This combination Fire Department south of Baltimore handles 74,000 responses each year covering a population of 512,000. The EMS service is a fire based system with 22 ALS units and 9 BLS units. http://www.aacounty.org/Fire/index.cfm Ride-alongs will be offered Tuesday March 2nd - Saturday March 6th from 9am - 3pm, for approximately 6 hours each. Baltimore City Fire Department
The City of Baltimore has a daily population of over one million people and averages 140,000 EMS calls per year. Approximately 75% of those calls result in patient transport by the Baltimore City Fire Department utilizing 22 EMS transport units. Ride-alongs will be offered each day in 2 shifts; 8 am–4pm and 4 pm-12 midnight. Contact: Deputy Chief, EMS Dickson J.

Baltimore County Fire Department
This department has 51 EMS transport units and 8 supervisors that respond to over 90,000 EMS calls each year. They operate a combination career and volunteer service. Ride-alongs will be offered each day from 9am to 11pm for 4 or 8 hours. Johns Hopkins Hospital Critical Care Ground Transport Program
This unit also includes the in-house Critical Care Transport Program. Ride-alongs can be scheduled Sunday, February 28th from 7am until 7pm

Johns Hopkins Lifeline / STAT MedEvac 10 Helicopter Program
Observe a shift at the Johns Hopkins / STAT MedEvac 10 helicopter base, located on the Inner Harbor. STAT MedEvac is a direct Air Carrier E3MA774L and arranges and coordinates the operation of air ambulance services. All flights are operated by STAT MedEvac. Montgomery County (MD) Fire and Rescue Service
Located just 30 miles from Baltimore, this combination system responds to 125,000 calls for service each year providing fire, rescue, emergency medical services, as well as special operations including a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, HazMat response team, and Swift Water Rescues teams. New Castle County (DE) EMS Division
This is a multi-jurisdictional county municipal paramedic service covering the 437 square miles and over 526,000 residents of New Castle County, Delaware. This “tiered response” non-transport ALS agency has a reputation for clinical excellence. The EMS Division has 116 authorized positions and responded to almost 30,000 incidents in 2007. www.nccde.org/ems Ride-alongs will be offered throughout the conference. Stafford County (VA) Fire and Rescue Department
This department is a combination (volunteer/career) fire and rescue department with over 450 personnel in the Metropolitan Washington, DC area. It operates 11 Engines (3 ALS), 4 Trucks, 3 Heavy Rescues, 3 Fire Boats and 20 ambulances (10 ALS) answering 23,000 calls each year. For a map/location see: www.staffordfirerescue.com. 2010 Observations
The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center is Maryland’s Primary Adult Resource Center (PARC) for Trauma. In the Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU), you will have the rare opportunity to observe the assessment and treatment of critically injured patients and examine the admission process in one of the world’s premier trauma centers. As the patient enters the hospital either by land or air, the observer can experience the transition from prehospital providers to the TRU clinical staff. Rotations in the TRU are available Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Limited Space, pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Burn Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
Directed by physician burn specialists, the multidisciplinary team includes nurses, a nurse practitioner, physical and occupational therapists, and other specialists who work with over 1,000 burn patients each year. Tour is Friday, March 5th at 3pm. Meet in the Pratt Street lobby of the Convention Center at 3pm. You will return by 4:30pm. Contact: Contact: Monnie Jones at mwinkle2@jhmi.edu. This tour includes the Emergency Department, Pediatric Trauma Center and PICU, Adult Trauma Center, various Critical Care Units and an overview of other services offered at the Hospital, including the MEDEVAC 10 Helicopter. Maryland’s EMS System
Tour 3 facilities on one tour! Visit the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Maryland State Police and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Service Systems (MIEMSS). Space is limited to 30 participants, so sign up early. Tours are offered Wed., March 3rd at 5pm, Thurs., March 4th at 3:30pm & Friday, March 5th at 3:30pm.
